Oil & Gas Summit MENA
A forum for innovative oil and gas exploration and production leaders across the Middle East & North Africa
The global oil and gas industry is currently experiencing an influx of pain points. A perpetually increasing energy demand, fluctuating commodities prices, rapidly depleting natural resources, and social and environmental considerations only tap the surface. The Euro Zone crisis and a lagging U.S. recovery following the global economic fallout are impacting oil and gas organizations all over the world. As a region with about half of the world’s oil reserves, the Middle East and North Africa is a critical player in the global oil and gas industry.
Countries in the Middle East and North Africa accounted for 36 percent of global oil production in 2011, and the region as a whole currently plans to invest $740 billion in energy projects in the next five years. Libya, with Africa’s largest oil reserves of 46 billion barrels, has the potential to become an important hub in the global energy market in the coming years. In Oman, the state-owned Oman Oil Company (OOC) has current plans for an $800 million petrochemical project. Qatar holds the world’s third-largest natural gas reserve and is the largest global supplier of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), and the country’s O&G industry is slated for considerable growth. The geological potential is evident, but the MENA region’s oil and gas sector faces a number of challenges.
Political and economic instability following the Arab Spring and subsequent reorganization of governments in the region have slowed investment in the past year. Although Countries across the Middle East and North African region have begun to recover from their respective socio-political transformations in the past year, securing sustainable growth is crucial. The MENA region must address current challenges and concerns, including, but not limited to, new-generation exploration technologies, reservoir characterization, production optimization, deepwater drilling, heavy oil, enhanced oil recovery, cost containment, acquiring skilled workers and health, safety and environmental risks.
